The “Only in America” Tour—Part 7
Rocketbuster Boots

If the boot fits, wear it. Nothing says “Americana” like a pair of Western boots. Cowboys project the rugged individualism, self-reliance, and freedom that our nation values.
After unplugging in March’s “Just About Anything,” I am back in the saddle again and ready to continue writing about the “Only in America” Tour I embarked on last summer with my college friend Thea. This month we’ll kick up our heels in El Paso, Texas—“The Boot Capital of America.” A search for unusual sites led us to Rocketbuster Boots. A custom-made boot store isn’t your typical tourist stop, but this one turned out to be a highlight of our trip.

There were several things I liked about Rocketbuster Boots. First of all, their boots were beautiful, hand-crafted, fun, and unique. Then the store itself was delightful with space-themed decorations and quirky collections. Thea was particularly fond of the paintings of Elvis on black velvet. And finally, the owner and her staff members were welcoming, off-beat, and generous with their time. They and their creations displayed a great sense of humor.
Best of all, as a person who is fascinated with the creative process, I enjoyed learning how the owner Nevina Christi takes a customer’s idea and transforms it step-by-step into a one-of-a-kind work of art. It’s all about inspiration, design, and craftsmanship.
Check out the history section on the Rocketbuster’s website, and learn how Nevina went from working fashion runways in New York to owning a boot store in El Paso. She is a wonderful example of a person who stumbled upon her perfect life.
Sometimes you don’t know if the boot fits—until you try it on.
