In the 8½ months since we’ve been in Africa, there have been 459 mass shootings in the United States (according to the above list by Wikipedia). The Gun Violence Archive defines a mass shooting as involving “four or more shot (injured or killed) in a single incident, at the same general time and location, not including the shooter.”
These mass shootings have resulted in a total of 524 dead and 1,939 injured (including the shooters). Yet this is but the tip of the iceberg. According to Dr. Los Lee, an associate professor of Pediatrics and Emergency Medicine at Harvard Medical School, “mass shootings account for less than 1% of all firearms deaths in the United States, that’s for all ages.” That means that despite how horrible mass shootings are, there are 100 times more fatalities by other forms of gun violence and accidental deaths due to firearms.
So many mornings I have read the news from back home in America, and I’ve been saddened to learn of yet another massacre. I think most people can agree that there is a problem. But what folks disagree about is how to solve the problem. The issues are multi-layered and complex. There is no quick and easy fix. But left unchecked, the trouble will only worsen.
Accidents and injuries are the leading cause of death for individuals between the age of 1 and 44 years. Once upon a time, motor vehicle accidents were the number one cause of accidental death for those aged 1 to 24. So, the government implemented safety measures such as seat belts, car seats, and air bags. Over the past two decades, the rate of motor vehicular-related deaths in the young population has decreased by 40%.
But now, the leading cause of death for children and young adults is no longer motor vehicle accidents. The leading cause of death for this age group is gun violence and accidental injury by guns. [I reference the April 18, 2022 article in Forbes titled “The Leading Cause of Death In Children And Youths Is Now Guns” by Nina Shapiro. Shapiro cites statistics from an article published in the April 16, 2022 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.]
Since we’ve been gone . . . much has happened; little has changed.
